The controversy surrounding the viral ₹370 biryani remark from comedian Pranit More’s stand-up show has now reached the National Commission for Women (NCW). In a major development, the Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and summoned both Pranit More and audience member Himanshu Jangra to appear before it later this month. The action comes amid an ongoing investigation and growing public outrage over the comments made during the Gurugram show, which many critics have described as insensitive and harmful.

NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Viral Video
The National Commission for Women has expressed serious concern over the viral clips and media reports related to the stand-up performance held in Gurugram, Haryana. According to the Commission, certain remarks made during the show appeared to normalize or glorify behaviour involving sexual harassment and non-consensual sexual relations. In its statement, the NCW observed, “Normalizing or glorifying any behavior that infringes upon women’s consent, dignity, and personal liberty has a detrimental impact on society, and such matters cannot be taken lightly.”

The Commission stated that presenting coercive behaviour as entertainment raises important concerns regarding women’s dignity and public accountability. Taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has reportedly written to the Director General of Police (DGP) of Haryana, directing immediate and time-bound action. The Commission has sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days.

The report is expected to include, whether an FIR has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant provisions, details of the action taken against those allegedly involved, the current status of the investigation into the viral video, and information regarding the roles of the organisers, performers, and venue management.

The NCW has also issued notices to comedian Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra. Both individuals have been directed to appear before the Commission on June 22 at 4 PM. The Commission stated that it intends to examine the matter thoroughly and understand the circumstances surrounding the controversial remarks and their subsequent circulation on social media.
