Actor Omi Vaidya, best known for playing Chatur Ramalingam in 3 Idiots, has extended his support to education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, urging people not to remain silent as Wangchuk’s health continues to deteriorate during his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The actor shared an emotional video message, drawing a connection between Wangchuk and the iconic character of Phunsukh Wangdu from the 2009 blockbuster, which was inspired by the Ladakh-based innovator.
In the video, Omi appealed to the public to pay attention to Wangchuk’s condition and support his cause. Referring to the real-life inspiration behind Aamir Khan’s character in 3 Idiots, he said, “I don’t want Phunsukh Wangdu to die.” He urged citizens to come together and ensure that Wangchuk’s voice is heard before it is too late.
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for more than two weeks. According to reports, the activist launched the protest to press for action on issues relating to alleged examination paper leaks and broader concerns about education reforms. His health has reportedly deteriorated during the fast, with doctors and supporters expressing concern over his continued refusal to end the protest.
In his message, Omi said many people recognise Sonam Wangchuk because of 3 Idiots, but stressed that the educator’s real-life work extends far beyond inspiring a film character. He described Wangchuk as someone who has devoted his life to improving education and working towards environmental sustainability, adding that such contributions deserve public support during difficult times.
The actor’s appeal quickly gained traction on social media, where fans praised him for speaking up. Several users appreciated Omi for using the popularity of 3 Idiots to draw attention to Wangchuk’s protest, while others shared clips from the film alongside messages urging authorities to address the activist’s demands.
Sonam Wangchuk is widely known as an engineer, innovator and education reformer from Ladakh. He founded the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) and has received national and international recognition for his work in sustainable development, alternative education and environmental conservation. His life and ideas partly inspired the character of Phunsukh Wangdu in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots.
Omi Vaidya’s statement comes as concern over Wangchuk’s health continues to grow. Reports indicate that the activist has lost significant weight since beginning his fast, prompting appeals from supporters, public figures and activists asking him to end the hunger strike while simultaneously calling on the authorities to engage with his demands through dialogue.
The actor is among several public personalities who have recently voiced support for Wangchuk. Veteran actor Zeenat Aman also urged the government to initiate dialogue with the activist, while legal experts and social activists have appealed for immediate intervention in view of his deteriorating health.
Omi, who gained nationwide recognition for his portrayal of the ambitious and competitive Chatur Ramalingam in 3 Idiots, has largely maintained a low profile in recent years while continuing to work in Indian and international film projects. His latest public appeal has once again brought attention to the enduring connection between the film and the real-life educator who inspired one of its most memorable characters.
As Wangchuk’s hunger strike enters another day, Omi Vaidya’s appeal has added a Bollywood voice to the growing calls for action. His message has focused attention not only on the activist’s worsening health but also on the issues that prompted the protest, with supporters continuing to urge authorities to engage in discussions before the situation worsens further.
