Guru Dutt’s niece, Kalpana Lajmi, a critically acclaimed filmmaker has been battling kidney cancer and has regularly been in and out of the ICU. The 61-years-old filmmaker’s health worsened in the early hours of 6th November and she was rushed to hospital in the Mumbai suburbs.
For the uninitiated, Kalpana is best known for films like Daaman, Rudaali and more. During her active years in the industry, she worked with eminent personalities like Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Kirron Kher, Dimple Kapadia and Gulzar among others. Dimple Kapadia and Raveena Tandon won National Film Award for Best Actress for their performance in Kalpana’s Rudaali and Daman respectively. Kalpana was also legendary singer and music composer Bhupen Hazarika’s partner for 40 years. She even wanted to make a biopic on his life which has now taken a backseat owing to her deteriorating health.
Off late, a lot of charity talks are doing rounds about several celebrities paying the medical expenses of ailing Kalpana Lajmi. However, as source claims that only Alia Bhatt and her mother Soni Razdan are bearing the most of it. “Kalpana’s medical bills, which come to about Rs 2.5 lakh a week for four dialysis that she undergoes, are borne entirely by Soni and her daughter Alia. Soni is Kapana’s closest friend, and she’s been monitoring the funds for Kalpana’s treatment. Every time the bills pile up, Soni informs Alia, who pays them,” said the source.
Soni Razdan and Kalpana Lajmi share a deep friendship from a long time. Apparently, Alia, who has grown up with Lajmi, doesn’t want to publicise her contribution.
“She would be very upset and embarrassed to know this has been let out. But it’s important to let Kalpana’s well-wishers know that only one 24-year-old girl is shouldering her medical bills, and it’s about time others came forward to do their bit. Alia and Soni are valiantly pushing on with Kalpana’s medical care. But more people need to come forward with financial help. Right now it’s just Alia,” the source further added.
In a recent interview to The Quint, the filmmaker had sought financial help from the film fraternity. “’I will be very honest with you, I do require help because I have not earned the amount of money that can take care of my treatment. This is a dreadful disease which drains you out completely so I’m hoping and praying that the film industry can get together and help me out as a fraternity. But the three people who have stood by me and helped me throughout are Soni Razdan, Mahesh Bhatt and Alia Bhatt as well as my mother, brother and also uncle, Shyam Benegal. They have been of great help. But it’s not fair on one person to keep on spending. So I hope Ashoke Pandit and the fraternity, whether it’s the producers or the directors or the writers or the actors, if they can get together and give me prolonged financial help. Atleast, I should be able to stand on my feet and earn once again. It’s all God’s grace that I have come this far. My state of affairs are quite depressing,” she had told The Quint.
We are totally floored with your humble and kind nature, Alia! <3
