Though Bollywood witnesses many a great films every year, from one spectacular performance to another, things have come to a halt with the entire nation being in lockdown and practicing the norms of social distancing. From release dates being postponed, to shoots getting cancelled amid corona virus situation, it’s unlikely that anything new will hit the theatre for a few more months still.
But with the lack of films being released on the big screen, and the wait being too much to handle, fans and avid viewers have handsomely switched to online alternatives and sources. With no absolute dates for commencements of anything releated to production or releases, it won’t be wrong to say that internet media and video service providers are the next best bets available in the market.
So when the decision to exclusively premiere the film,’ Gulabo Sitabo’ featuring the two most prominent names of Indian cinema – Amitabh Bachhan and Ayushmann Khurana, via Amazon Prime video on 12th of June,2020 was made, it was on its own terms, and with the best alternatives available. Said to be quirky tale of two slimy scheming foxes in a game of one-upmanship , with the plot full of local humour and songs, it is a film that will be depicting day-to-day struggles of a common man.
Regarding the release decision made for the film, Vijay Subramaniam, Director and Head, Content, Amazon Prime Video, India said, “At Amazon, we’re listening to our customers, and working backward from there. Gulabo Sitabo is one of the most anticipated films of the year. We are happy to exclusively premiere Gulabo Sitabo on Prime Video. It is the first step in our endeavor to bring superior cinematic experiences to our customer’s doorstep.”
Though it is every actor’s wish to entertain the viewers through the big screen, a source from the corporate sector revealed that, “Everyone expected it to be a big screen release. But these are difficult times and businesses are simply protecting themselves. The makers were offered a sum of money that they couldn’t resist. It’s a big price for an essentially multiplex film and they have got this price because it has Amitabh and Ayushmann. No actor can have a say in the internal business decisions of a company even if they feel differently about the final call and that’s what has happened here.”
