An era came to an end as legendary actor Shashi Kapoor passed away yesterday in Mumbai at the age of 79 due to prolonged illness. He underwent a bypass surgery a few months back and was admitted in the hospital due to chest infection when he breathed his last.
Bollywood celebs rushed to the late actor’s residence yesterday to pay their last tributes. Shashi Kapoor’s co-star of many memorable and blockbuster hits like Deewar, Amitabh Bachchan was spotted outside his residence along with Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Big B has also penned down an emotional letter remembering his friend co-star. “Shashi Kapoor !” was what one heard as he extended a warm soft hand out to you in introduction ; that devastating smile complimenting the twinkle in his eyes. He needn’t have done so. Every one knew him. But this was his infectious humble self. When he spoke, there was a mischievous, gentle, almost inaudible, delicate, yodel, in his voice – most endearing and comforting to the one he was introduced to,” reads a part of the letter.
Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan were also captured entering his residence. It was evident on Bebo’s face that she was deeply saddened and upset. Saif and Kareena were apparently quite close to Shashi Kapoor. This year, they even visited him for new year celebrations.
Saif Ali Khan once talked about Shashi Kapoor and his Prithvi theatre, and said, I love theatre and there is something so special about Prithvi as it is so intimate and so close to the action. It’s also special for the fact that the Kapoors have this legacy. I remember Shashi Kapoor coming to our home at Carmichael Road where I grew up. While he worked with my mum in films, he was friendly with both my parents and was probably the closest actor that I remember from those days.
Even in those days he would come and talk to my parents about doing King Liar on stage. I remember as a child once he was going to a party and my father lent him his bandhgala. It’s wonderful to see how Kunal has taken forward the family legacy. It’s important for us in Mumbai to go out and participate in things like this that is done for promoting the arts and that is why I am here. It’s beautiful to see how Prithvi brings together people and it’s a place Mumbai can be proud of.”
Kajol was also all tensed as she entered Shashi Kapoor’s residence to pay her last respects to one of the most handsome actors of Indian cinema. The entire country is taken aback with the news of his death.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took it to Twitter and expressed condolences. “Shashi Kapoor’s versatility could be seen in his movies as well as in theatre, which he promoted with great passion. His brilliant acting will be remembered for generations to come. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers,” he tweeted.
Actress Hema Malini expressed her grief on twitter. “My dear friend & co star of many successful movies – Shashi Kapoor, is no more. He leaves behind many pleasant memories of the camaraderie we shared on the sets during our shooting schedules.
RIP dear friend. I will surely miss you!”
Shashi’s Sidhartha co-actress Simi Garewal is also deeply saddened. “The last of that generation of Kapoors gone. A gentleman and friend gone. An era gone. All that remains are his films and precious memories,” she tweeted.
In his career which spanned over 4 decades, Shashi was Padma Bhushan award winner, Dada Saheb Phalke award winner and also won National Film awards thrice.
The actor’s last rites are to be held today in Mumbai’s Santacruz.
