Bollywood Celebs You Thought Were Indians…But Actually Aren’t

There is so much information which will keep surprising us all our lives. Breakups, linkups, public spats and what not. Just like how some of our favourite Bollywood stars are not citizens of India at all. While this country is their home, these stars were not born in India and therefore, they don’t have Indian Passports! So, without much ado, we present to you a list of Bollywood actors who are not of Indian nationality. Some of them might come across as real shockers.


1. Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone, the actress who rules the heart of millions of people, wasn’t born in India. She was born in Copenhagen, Denmark since her father, Prakash Padukone, who is an ace badminton player, was undergoing an extensive training session there. Surprised, aren’t you? She later moved to Bengaluru with her family when she was 11 months old.


2. Monica Dogra

The Dhobi Ghat actor was born in the US and is quite known for being a part of the electronic rock duo Shaa’ir and Func.


3. Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar, the man who is now one of the best actors in B-town, is Canadian. Surprised? Well, you should be! While Akshay was born in Amritsar, Punjab, he grew up in Delhi. Before he became a Bollywood star, he was learning martial arts in Bangkok. He can’t vote in India. That’s because he holds a Canadian passport and had to give up his Indian citizenship for the same.


4. Nargis Fakhri

The Bollywood actress who entered the Bollywood Industry with Rockstar opposite Ranbir Kapoor, actually has American nationality. 


5. Imran Khan

The Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na star and Aamir Khan’s nephew Imran Khan isn’t an Indian. He was born in Wisconsin, US, and shifted to Mumbai after his parents divorced and studied in Bombay Scottish School. And if he gives up his US passport, he will need to pay 10 years’ tax in advance!


6. Evelyn Sharma

As her name probably suggests, she is half-Indian and half-German. Evelyn was born in Frankfurt, Germany. She completed her studies in the UK before entering the world of Bollywood.


7. Alia Bhatt

We bet you didn’t know this. Alia was born in London and holds a British passport. She acquired citizenship of the country, as her mother is of British origin. When Alia turned 21 in 2014, she couldn’t vote during the elections as she isn’t ‘Indian’. 


8. Sunny Leone

Born Karenjit Kaur Vohra, the adult entertainer turned Bollywood actress is of Canadian-American origin. Even though Sunny Leone charmed her way into Bollywood, the actress doesn’t have any Indian citizenship rights.
