Deepika Padukone To Play Acid Attack Survivor Laxmi Aggarwal In Meghna Gulzar film

There have been rumours going round that Deepika Padukone may collaborate with Raazi director Meghna Gulzar for her next film. And guess what, the actor, who was last seen as Rani Padmavati in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavat, is said to have taken up the role of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal in a Meghna Gulzar directorial. Not only this, but Deepika has also decided to turn producer with the film


This untitled is a story of Laxmi Agarwal, who was attacked by a 32-year-old man at the age of 15. She had to undergo several surgeries and later, she took up the job of helping acid attack survivors and promoted the campaign to stop the acid attacks. Laxmi also established an NGO chhanv foundation for acid attack survivors. She also opened a cafe which is fully managed by the acid attack survivors. Laxmi even received the US State Department International Women Of Courage award in 2014 from the former first lady of united states, Michelle Obama.

Talking about the movie,” when I heard this story, I was deeply moved as it’s not just one of violence but of strength and courage, hope and victory. It made such an impact on me, that personally and creatively, I needed to go beyond and so the decision to turn to produce,” Deepika told Mumbai Mirror.

Meghna Gulzar whose last directorial Raazi was a big hit and succeed at the box office, feels that Laxmi story needs to be told to bring awareness in the society. “Using Laxmi story as a lens, we are attempting to explore these aspects and the consequences of acid attack -related violence in our society. This what makes this must be told story relevant -awareness is the first step towards change”, she told Mumbai Mirror.

Deepika Padukone will be co-producing the untitled film with Raazi director and the shooting of the film is expected to begin in February 2019.

With this movie, Deepika will debut as a producer and will follow the footsteps of actors Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma. Both Peecee and Anushka turned as producers with the films like the Ventilator and NH 10 respectively. Ventilator became the 10th highest grossing Marathi film of all times and also won 3 national awards at the 64th National Film Awards.
