Dhanush recently urged students in Tamil Nadu to learn and value their native language. He said that every person from a Tamil-speaking region should know Tamil, adding that not knowing the language is something to be ashamed of. He encouraged the younger generation to preserve and respect their linguistic heritage. Tamil superstar Dhanush recently visited his alma mater, Thaai Sathya Matriculation School in Chennai, where he inaugurated a new academic block he funded.
During the event, he became emotional while addressing students and encouraged them to value and take pride in their mother tongue. He said that not knowing Tamil should never be considered a matter of pride. Dhanush shared that he struggled with English during childhood but gradually became fluent in Tamil. He also recalled a memorable experience during the shooting of a film in Belgium, which changed his perspective on language and strengthened his appreciation for Tamil deeply.
Dhanush Says Students Should Learn Tamil Properly
During his speech, Dhanush said that eight out of ten people he meets today cannot properly read or write Tamil, even though they speak English fluently. He described this growing disconnect from the Tamil language as deeply disheartening and concerning. The Raayan actor recalled the incident and shared his emotional experience openly. “I did a film, a French production, and the shoots were in Belgium. When they asked me if I knew English, I said, ‘Yes, I know,’ and they were very surprised. Usually, people embarrass you for not knowing English, but they were surprised when I said yes. When I asked why, they responded, ‘You should know your mother tongue well. English is a bonus, right?’ That is how they perceive language.”
Dhanush added that everyone should learn their mother tongue before anything else. He stressed that people must be able to read and write in their native language properly. “Saying you don’t know Tamil is not something to be proud of. Not knowing your mother tongue is actually shameful,” Dhanush added. He asked the students to give importance to Tamil and understand the importance of mother tongue. He concluded his speech by motivating the students to study hard and achieve their dreams.
