However, problems began right from the previews, as screenings were cancelled in prominent Mumbai theaters like Maratha Mandir and Gaiety Galaxy. Despite an apology from Aditya Dhar and assurances that the issues would be resolved before the official release, the situation only worsened. Reports suggest that nearly 500 theaters nationwide were affected, with exhibitors forced to cancel shows and issue refunds. Multiple factors contributed to the disruption as Tamil and Telugu versions of Dhurandhar 2 did not reach theaters on time. Without the required content, exhibitors had no choice but to cancel scheduled screenings. As explained by a Hyderabad exhibitor, a KDM is essential to unlock a film’s digital print (DCP). Without it, even if the film is physically available, it cannot be screened. Delays in issuing KDMs played a major role in the cancellations.

Industry analyst Anupam Reddy pointed out that the situation stemmed from poor planning by the filmmakers, though he expressed hope that the issue would be resolved quickly. Meanwhile, theater owner Manoj Desai, who operates Gaiety Galaxy and Maratha Mandir, openly criticized the distributors. He stated that the absence of KDMs made it impossible to screen the film and expressed frustration over the lack of coordination.

To manage the situation, some theaters took alternative steps, like some issued refunds to customers for cancelled shows, some screened the Hindi version with subtitles in place of regional versions, and some even cancelled shows throughout the day due to uncertainty. Even Hindi screenings faced disruptions in certain locations, adding to the chaos. The biggest impact was felt by moviegoers who had pre-booked tickets and were eagerly waiting for the film’s release. Social media was flooded with complaints, confusion, and criticism of the film’s management.
