A complaint has been lodged against Bengali actors Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Swastika Mukherjee over alleged “provocative” social media posts linked to the 2021 West Bengal post-poll violence. According to reports, the complaint was submitted at Kolkata’s Gariahat Police Station by a city-based lawyer.
The complaint reportedly accuses the actors of making or endorsing social media remarks that allegedly contributed to tensions during the politically sensitive period following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election results.
According to the complaint, Parambrata Chattopadhyay had posted on social media in May 2021, “Let this day be declared as World Bashing Day,” shortly after the election results were announced in West Bengal. Swastika Mukherjee allegedly reshared the post and responded to it online.
The complainant has reportedly alleged that the posts had the potential to encourage violence and create hostility during the post-election period in the state.
Reports also stated that references to BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar’s murder during the 2021 post-poll violence period were included in the complaint submitted to the police.
According to reports, the complaint was filed on May 21, 2026, at Gariahat Police Station in Kolkata. Police have not yet officially whether an FIR has formally been registered in the matter.
Neither Parambrata Chattopadhyay nor Swastika Mukherjee has publicly reacted to the latest allegations so far.
The issue has generated discussion across West Bengal’s political and entertainment circles because both actors are among the most recognised names in Bengali cinema and OTT content.
Parambrata Chattopadhyay is known for acting and directing projects in Bengali and Hindi cinema. He gained national attention through films and series such as Kahaani, Pari, Aranyak and Shonar Pahar. He has also directed several Bengali films over the years.
Swastika Mukherjee is a prominent Bengali actor who has appeared in films and OTT series including Paatal Lok, Qala, Dil Bechara and Criminal Justice.
The controversy has revived discussion around social media posts made during the politically volatile period following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. After the election results were declared on May 2, 2021, several incidents of alleged post-poll violence were reported from different parts of the state. Political parties had exchanged accusations regarding attacks and intimidation during that period.
According to reports, the complaint against the actors argues that public figures and celebrities should exercise caution while making statements on politically sensitive matters, especially during periods of unrest.
Reports further stated that the complainant has sought a detailed investigation into whether the social media activity in question could amount to incitement under relevant legal provisions.
The development comes amid increasing scrutiny of social media activity by public personalities in politically charged cases across West Bengal. Earlier this month, another FIR was reportedly filed against Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee over alleged inflammatory election campaign remarks linked to the 2026 Assembly elections.
The latest complaint involving Parambrata and Swastika has now added another layer to the ongoing political and legal debates around social media commentary and public statements in Bengal.
Meanwhile, both actors continue to remain active professionally. Parambrata was recently seen associated with multiple Bengali and Hindi OTT projects, while Swastika Mukherjee has continued working across films and streaming platforms.
As of now, no official statement has been released by Kolkata Police regarding the status of the complaint or whether further legal action will follow.
