Jasjit Singh Gill aka Jimmy Shergill, one of the most class apart actors whose performances never failed to impress us turns 45 today. Hailing from a Sikh family, Jimmy is a much loved prominent face in Punjabi film industry and has completed 20 years long time in Bollywood as well. With his offbeat film choices and versatile roles, Jimmy Shergill stood apart from rest his counterparts who often stick to the romantic hero image.
Army Aspirer: A well educated and an intellectual actor, yet again a rarity in Bollywood completed his studies from Punjab University, Patiala and aspired a career in Army. “I would have been an army officer. I always wanted to join the Armed Forces, right from my school days.” he once said in an interview. It was his one cousin who convinced him to move to Mumbai and try his luck in films.
The Strange Connection: He has worked in the first films of various directors. Like Raju Hirani’s Munna Bhai MBBS, Gulzar’s Maachis, Anand L Rai’s Strangers and Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Haasil; and till date shares a good bond with them. These directors too, wooed by his acting skills repeatedly cast him their new projects.
Lover Boy? Nahh: He carried a bearded look in his debut, ‘Maachis’ and people could literally not recognise him after he got those beards go off. Thus he remained unnoticed his next film was a low performer. But then Mohabbatein happened. The role of a cute looking intense lover boy got him an image of a ‘Romantic Hero’. Shergill believed he could not sustain the image of a lover boy in the film industry for a longer run and accordingly went for brave roles in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, Haasil and Munna Bhai MBBS.
The Most Left Out Hero: Well this one is the most hilarious one. IDK what kinda tiff does he have with the scriptwriters that his leading ladies always end up leaving him in the films. Be it any of his films, he the happily ever after moment never came in his films. (wait, we will make it easier for you). Dil Hai Tumhaara, Munna Bhai MBBS, Happy Bhaag Jaayegi, Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Raqueeb, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster….and the list goes on.
Anti-Social In the times when celebrities are launching their own apps to build a better connect with their fans, here too, Jimmy is the unique one. Leave alone the Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter, he is just still trying to explore Facebook.
A one woman man, married his long time girlfriend in 2001 is a proud parent of a baby boy and is leading a happy family life. We just hope he gets some notable and strong roles to prove his potential and rise again in the otherwise falling career. We love you Jimmy! <3
