Hyderabad police seeks details of Twitter accounts that posted rape and murder threats to actress Meera Chopra
Twitter India has been issued a notice by Hyderabad cyber crime police in the Meera Chopra online rape and murder threats case on 17th June. Meera Chopra had filed a cyber complaint with the assistance of the National Commission for Women(NCW) against trollers who had threatened her with rape and murder on Twitter. The cases were registered under Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology by the Hyderabad police.
For the unversed Meera Chopra had been abused and threatened with rape and murder by trollers during an interaction with her fans during the #AskMeera session on the social media platform last year after she said that she did not know about South India film star Junior NTR and she was not his fan.
Meera said in a statement, “I conducted ‘AskMeera’ session on Twitter and a fan asked me about my favourite actor from the south film industry. I said, Mahesh Babu. Then somebody asked if I liked Junior NTR, and I said I don’t know him and I am not a fan. That’s it. As soon as I said that, I was bombarded with abuses, murder threats, rape threats, character assassination and threats against my parents. Some morphed my face with porn actors. I have got close to 30,000 abusive tweets so far,”
The incident was reported as cyberbullying to the Hyderabad police. Now the Hyderabad cyber crime police have sought the details of the accounts which were involved in the incident. Multiple notices had been issued in the past but Twitter India never responded according to the Cybercrime department. According to new rules, they will be subjected to an inquiry if the Grievance Officer does not respond now.
