“I Asked Bappi Da, Why Do You Steal Foreign Tunes? There Was Pure Joy In His Answer”: Mir, Indian Radio Jockey Remembering Bappi Lahiri!
Indian radio jockey, television anchor, actor, singer Mir Afsar Ali aka Mir remembers his interview with Bappi Lahiri and said, “Bappi Da has brought Western music close to us. Sometimes he used to take the melody from another song. As a child, I did not understand that the source of that melody has across the sea. That’s what it felt like!”
Mir added that if there is no tree then there is no fruit, in the life of his entertainment profession that tree is Bappi Lahiri. He has made fun of Bappi Da many times while doing radio or comedy shows! Without him, the industry would not have grown. Nothing could be further from the truth. Bappi Lahiri has helped to do that.
On remembering Bappi Lahiri, Mir said, “Bappi Lahiri is a very funny person from a young age. There are a few people who are a real joy to see. The mind becomes happy. He is like that. We used to play songs at school tables. Bappi Da has brought western music close to us. Sometimes he used to take the melody from another song. As a child, I did not understand that the source of that melody has across the sea. That’s what it felt like! When I was growing up, I used to listen to foreign songs on my gramophone at my friends’ house.”
Later on, he said that he got the opportunity to meet Bappi Da due to his work. Mir said, “I asked directly, you steal the tune. Why did you bring up the tune like this?” He replied, “I am inspired.” For the first time, I did not understand. Ask again. I got the answer, “Inspire.” I said, “Okay! You are inspired. Be inspired.”
Mir also added, “He’s the funny guy whom you want to hug every time you see him. But today there is only one regret. I did not wish Bappi Da a happy birthday in 2006. I remember that incident. Every year on November 26, I called him on the radio and greeted him. Every year. I also talked to him on the phone on the night of November 26, 2006. I will call you the next morning. But I did not get an answer by calling on the 28th. I could not greet Bappi Da on the radio. I came to know the reason later. On the night of November 26, Bappi Da was on his way to the Taj Hotel in Mumbai.
There were plans to celebrate the birthday with his family at midnight. I could not greet Bappi Da on the radio. I came to know the reason later. On the night of November 26, Bappi Da was on his way to the Taj Hotel in Mumbai.”
