Harmanpreet’s striking innings against Australia helped India into the World Cup final by 36 runs in the semi-final which was held in Derby on Thursday. It is only the second time that India has made it to the final of the Women’s World Cup.
The Indian openers, Smriti Mandhana and Punam Raut couldn’t gather enough runs and lost their wickets within first 10 overs. This was when Harmanpreet Singh and Mithali Raj came to the crease in a 66- run stand. After making 36 runs, Mithali too dismissed. But Harmanpreet kept her game going at 39 off 57 balls. After Mithali, it was Deepti Sharma who played in partnership with Kaur. Harmanpreet soon completed her 90-ball century in the 35th over. The duo managed to keep up a strong game until Deepti Sharma lost her wicket by scoring 25. By the end of the 42 overs, Harmanpreet smashed as many as 20 fours and 7 sixes.
The Indian vice-captain left Australia bowlers awestruck by handling the game one-sidedly. She managed to play an outstanding knock of 171 runs against 155 balls which reminded every cricket fan about Kapil Dev’s eccentric knock of 175 off 138 during a league game of 1983 Prudential World Cup. Her score is now the second highest individual score in ODIs for India. Deepti Sharma is one step ahead of her with an unbeaten score of 188 against South Africa which she earned earlier this year. During the game, Kaur has set a milestone by reaching from 51 to 100 in 26 balls which she further improved from 101 to 150 in just 17 balls.
