Ace filmmaker SS Rajamouli, the visionary behind global blockbusters like Baahubali, Baahubali 2, and RRR, is currently making headlines for his much-awaited film Varanasi to the World. Starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film draws inspiration from India’s history and mythology. The makers recently unveiled the title, teaser, and first-look posters in Hyderabad. However, it is Rajamouli’s bold remarks about religion and spirituality that have sparked intense discussion across social media.

At the Hyderabad event, Rajamouli addressed the symbolic and mythological elements often seen in his films. He clarified that despite these themes, he does not identify as a religious Hindu. He stated that Hinduism, in its original essence, predates religion, and said, “I am not a religious Hindu. I consider myself an atheist who practices Hinduism. It is a philosophy, a way of life that predates what we call Hinduism today.”

His comments have opened up discussions about spirituality, Hindu philosophy, and the role of mythology in cinema. Rajamouli also revealed that a technical power failure during the event caused portions of the Varanasi to the World teaser to be leaked online. He alleged that the footage was captured using a drone that was already operating for internal technical verification.

Deeply disappointed, Rajamouli addressed the audience emotionally in Telugu, “This is an emotional moment for me. I don’t believe in God. My father came and said Lord Hanuman will take care of everything from behind. Is that how he handles things? I’m angry thinking about it. My wife is a devotee of Lord Hanuman. She speaks to him like a friend. I’m angry at her too.” His candid confession surprised many fans, especially given the mythological symbolism in his work.
