But what if I told you that both these monuments have a direct connection to Bollywood? Yes, you read that right.

It was Bollywood’s Kalki Koechlin’s ancestor who engineered them. Kalki, born to French parents in Pondicherry, is a descendant of Maurice Koechlin, managing director of Gustave Eiffel’s Compagnie des Establishments Eiffel. Maurice Koechlin played an important role in the planning and construction of the Eiffel Tower.

When France lost a war to Prussia in the 1870s, the Koechlin family decided to become citizens of Switzerland and thus dropped French citizenship. However, after the defeat in 1918, the Koechlin family again applied for French citizenship.

Maurice Koechlin became the Managing Director of Eiffel’s company when Eiffel retired from the engineering profession in 1893. The company was renamed Société de construction de Levallois-Perret.

Maurice designed the Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World) – in collaboration with Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1884), and Eiffel Tower (1887-1889).

The Statue of Liberty is 151 feet tall and stands on a pedestal that is 154 feet tall. Its total height is 305 feet. It is visited by over 3.5 million people every year. Eiffel Tower is 300 m tall and 324 m to tip. It is visited by over 7 million people per year.
