Mother’s Day

The gift of good health.
By Suman Bajpai
A beautiful ad comes on TV about the mother-daughter relationship. The film is about two daughters trying to convince their mother to color her hair. They begin by telling her how she does so much for them and the family, and now it’s their turn to look after her. Giving her a pack of hair color is the children’s way of doing their bit for all the ‘dekhbhaal’ their mother has done. The campaign brings out this ‘dekhbhaal’ using a parent-child relationship. It promises to give back to all parents what they have given children all along – care, protection, and love.

Most influential person in our lives
Every moment spent with your mother is always special right from the day we get life in her womb till the last moment in this life. She is the one who introduces you to the new world outside womb, along with her selfless love, care and affection. Her undying spirit gives you boost of energy to surpass all the hurdles in  life. She encourages you constantly to make you fulfil your dreams because she is actually chasing it along with you.

Mothers are perhaps the most influential persons in our lives. They’ve raised us to the best of their ability with unconditional love and always wanting us to achieve our goals and be happy. Mothers get stressed and depleted over time through the accumulation of a thousand little things. Therefore, it is through doing little things each day  you as her daughter or son can give her lasting love and health and a feeling that you understand her love and concern and all the hardship she faced while bringing you up.

This Mother’s Day, skip the bouquets, flowers, or expensive jewelry and surprise her with new trendy and useful “gift of good Health”. As your mother is worth a real gem, taking care of her and her health would be the best gift you could ever give her.

You don’t have to buy her a treadmill. There are many other things you can do to give your mom a boost in terms of her physical (or mental) well-being. Most moms will truly appreciate that your Mother’s Day gift is aimed at keeping her happy, healthy, and in your life for a long time. In case you are drawing a blank, we come up with a list of healthy gift ideas for every mom.

Having fun: You want your mom to enjoy life, whether she is aging or in her mid-years. Help make her golden years fun by staying in touch frequently and making sure she has access to activities she cares about, whether that’s walking, painting or being with a beloved pet. Your mom’s undivided love and support helped make you the strong adult you are today. To help her remain healthy, mentally sharp, socially involved and happy, take care of her like she’s always taken care of you.

When family members don’t live nearby, technology like video chatting  can provide peace of mind for you, your mom and your family members and keep her connected to family and friends. This may seem like an everyday occurrence to you but for an ageing parent this is huge.

The gift of healthy eating:  Rather than taking her out for  an expensive lunch, make a light meal for your mother from your favourite healthy cookbook and leave the book behind for her to try out later. Present her with some skinny-kitchen gadgets, like a steam basket, grill pan, or oil mixter. You could even visit a nutritionist and follow it with a healthy meal. Mother’s Day is a great reason to get your mom to see a nutritionist. Nutritionists can really tailor their advice to whatever issues a woman is having with her diet.

Give your mother a day off: If your mom is stressed out, give her a day off from some of her responsibilities. Being a parent can be stressful even after children have grown up and left home.  Busy and stressed moms will often tell you not to get them anything when they are asked if there is anything you can do for them on Mother’s Day. If she is busy caring for others, perhaps older family members, it might be nice to offer to take over once in a while, so she doesn’t feel like the responsibility is solely on her shoulders.

Healthier chocolate: If you really want to give her chocolate, then choose dark chocolate.  Dark chocolate contains antioxidants, which can mop up the damaging free radicals known to play a role in heart disease and other illnesses. Just make sure you choose types with less sugar and fewer calories. This way you can satisfy her sweet tooth and benefit her heart.

Gym membership: The ultimate gift for mom. If you live in an urban area, you’ll be able to find a gym to suit any personality, whether your mom is shy and nervous about going to a gym for the first time, whether she wants a women-only gym. Whether or not your mom goes to a gym, some personal training sessions are a great gift. If she’s new to exercise, a trainer can help her learn how to exercise properly and effectively. If she already works out, a trainer can help get her out of an exercise rut — something many of us experience when we’ve been working out for a long time. No matter where she is on her exercise journey, a trainer can help motivate her.

Yoga kit: Everyone can benefit from yoga. It’s both calming and challenging. It helps you become stronger, more flexible and relaxed. Classes can be pricey, but with a video, a mat, blocks and a strap, your mom’s living room can turn into her very own yoga studio.
