Nalanda Temple Stampede: 8 Feared Dead as Crowd Surge Triggers Tragedy at Sheetla Mata Shrine

A tragic stampede broke out at the Sheetla Mata Temple in Nalanda district of Bihar on Tuesday, leaving at least eight people feared dead and several others injured. The incident occurred when a large number of devotees gathered at the temple for prayers, as Tuesdays typically draw heavy crowds at the shrine. According to initial reports, panic spread among devotees during the rush, leading to a stampede-like situation as people tried to move out of the overcrowded premises.

Victims Identified, Injured Shifted to Hospitals

Authorities confirmed that the chaos injured several devotees, and officials immediately took them to nearby hospitals before shifting them to better medical facilities. Officials identified two of the deceased as Rita Devi (50) and Rekha Devi (45), both residents of the Nalanda region. Authorities later cleared the temple premises and shut down the associated fair to prevent further mishaps.

Overcrowding and Mismanagement Suspected

Eyewitnesses and local reports suggest that excessive crowding during the religious gathering may have triggered the deadly incident. Devotees had gathered in large numbers for Sheetla Mata darshan, which often attracts heavy footfall on Tuesdays and during religious observances. Officials are still working to determine the exact cause of the stampede.

Probe Ordered, Compensation Announced

Bihar Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit has ordered a probe into the incident and directed senior officials to submit a detailed report. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has also announced compensation of ₹6 lakh for the families of the deceased. Senior district officials reached the site to assess the situation and oversee rescue and relief operations.

Questions Over Crowd Management at Religious Sites

The incident has once again raised concerns about crowd management and safety arrangements at religious places, especially during peak days and festivals. With thousands of devotees visiting temples regularly, experts stress the need for stricter safety protocols, better crowd control, and emergency preparedness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
