Have you ever recorded a Reel, watched it back and instantly deleted it because it felt too awkward?
Or spent hours trying to get the perfect lighting, the perfect background and the perfect caption, only to convince yourself that you’re “not ready yet”?
If you’ve done that, you’re not alone. Actor and entrepreneur Parul Gulati, founder of Nish Hair, recently shared one of the most honest pieces of advice for aspiring content creators during her conversation on the Divya Jain Podcast. The discussion covered entrepreneurship, Shark Tank and building a successful brand, but one line stayed with me long after the podcast ended.
“We all started cringe.”
I actually paused the podcast after hearing that.
We live in a time where social media only shows us polished creators. Every Instagram Reel looks professionally shot. Every YouTube video seems perfectly edited. Every creator appears confident on camera. What we rarely see are the hundreds of awkward videos, bad takes and uncomfortable first attempts that came before the success.
That is exactly what Parul was talking about. She said aspiring content creators often wait for the perfect shot, perfect lighting or the perfect background before posting. According to her, there is no such thing as perfect. If you keep waiting, you’ll never start.
The reason her advice resonated with me is because it came from experience. When Parul started Nish Hair, she couldn’t afford celebrity endorsements or big marketing campaigns. Instead of waiting until she had the budget, she became the face of her own brand. She picked up her phone, started creating content herself and consistently showed up online. Those early videos may not have been perfect, but they helped people connect with her story and trust her business.
Listening to her, I realised this isn’t just advice for aspiring content creators. It’s advice for anyone who’s delaying a dream because they don’t feel ready.
How many ideas never leave our notebooks because we think they aren’t good enough? How many small businesses never launch because the branding isn’t perfect? How many creators never upload their first Reel because they’re afraid of looking inexperienced?
Parul also made another point that felt surprisingly comforting. She laughed about how, years later, you’ll probably look back at your first video and wonder why you ever posted it. But instead of seeing that as something embarrassing, she sees it as proof that you’ve improved. If your old content makes you cringe today, it simply means you’ve grown.
I think that’s something every new creator needs to hear. Social media has convinced us that confidence comes first and success follows. But after listening to Parul Gulati, I walked away with a completely different perspective. Confidence isn’t something you wait for. It’s something you build by showing up, making mistakes and posting anyway.
Perhaps that’s why her advice felt so genuine. It wasn’t wrapped in motivational quotes or startup jargon. It was simple, honest and relatable. So, if you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to start creating content, maybe this is it.
As Parul Gulati reminded us, “We all started cringe.” The creators we admire today simply had the courage to post their first video anyway. And maybe that’s where every successful content creator’s journey truly begins.
