Patient Should Have Complete Trust in Doctor- This will avoid conflicts.
Healthy doctor-patient relationship improves wellness.
The doctor is the best judge or decision maker for a patient, not the family members, relatives or attendants because the doctor knows the actual situation and condition of severity of disease, it’s complications, treatment protocol and many more things. A doctor should be given a free hand for treatment and investigations. Never interfere in the treatment because doctor takes the best decision for the treatment of a patient as per the condition of the patient.
It is really unfortunate that the patient and the near and dear ones want assurances of immortality from the doctor and hospital.
Not everyone is a doctor
A doctor is not super human. He is also a human being. There are various reasons when disputes occur between doctors, hospitals and relatives or family members of deceased like lack of faith between doctor and the deceased’s family, incomplete or little knowledge of medical science to the deceased family because little knowledge is more dangerous than lack of or no knowledge.
It is very unfortunate in our country that everyone acts like a doctor whether a chemist, quack, neighbor, relatives or many more. When someone in the family becomes sick or suffers from illness everyone will advise treatment and give medicines also stating that this a very effective medicine as it gave big relief when given by a doctor as he had the same signs and symptoms, without knowing the side-effects of medicines and also without knowing that many diseases have almost similar symptoms.
All these things many times complicate the condition and the treatment becomes difficult. Medicine is a combination of science and art, basically medicine has no rule, it’s up to the doctor, who has to take a decision about the treatment, which medicine he has to give and in what dose and how many times and only a doctor’s decision is right and best for the patient because every doctor always takes the right decision as per his best knowledge of medicine and for the well-being of the patient.
Medical colleges vs internet
It is sure that no doctor willingly or knowingly will harm any patient because he is bound by the Hypocratic Oath, which every doctor takes at the time of taking his medical degree. A patient and his family members after reading about the disease on the internet thinks that they know everything about the disease and its treatment. They should know that the internet provides very shallow or incomplete knowledge, that is very dangerous. A medical student spends several years in the college to attain vast practical knowledge about the disease. Internet can never provide such knowledge otherwise every person can become a doctor without a medical degree.
Many times suspicion arises that doctors perform unnecessary operations without indications or requirement but this is not true because the same persons showing this suspicion blames the doctors when their patient dies with slight delay of surgery and the same in case of investigations. When doctors advise some investigations then people think that these are unnecessary and are advised by doctor to make money but investigations are very important while treating a patient. Everyone must understand this, otherwise doctors become helpless also. After completion of treatment and especially after the death of a patient, many of his family members don’t want to pay the hospital bill. They think that the hospital is charging much more money than required.
They think that the hospital is earning a lot but they don’t understand the expenses of the hospital like land cost, expenses on the construction of building, equipment cost, salary of manpower, electricity cost and many other expenses.
Every doctor takes decision as per the wellness of the patient.
A doctor is not a criminal
The patients and their family members should think reasonably about the payment of the hospital bill. When a serious patient dies with proper explanation of the prognosis of the patient by the doctor to his attendants, even then the patient’s attendants and relatives misbehave with the doctors and even manhandle them many times. They also destroy the hospital equipment and even the hospital building. That is absolutely wrong and shows that they have no faith in the doctor but when his family members has given consent then they are bound to agree with the doctor and should show full trust. Because of this mistrust many doctors refer the serious cases immediately to higher centres after giving first aid or immediately after stabilizing the condition of the patient. They don’t want to take the risk of treatment of a serious patient because in case of any complication or eventuality, the patient’s attendants will cause harm to the doctor and hospital property and sometimes they file criminal case against the doctor and hospital.
Kind of relationship between doctor and patient
For a good doctor-patient relationship, it is a must that the doctor should listen to the patients attentively or show interest in the patient, have a caring attitude, have a good bedside manner, exhibit other positive personality traits and spend time with patients. One thing should always be kept in mind is that the medical profession is not a business. It’s a very noble profession. A patient is not a consumer or a customer of a doctor. The doctor always treats the patient with the feeling of humanity and money should always be secondary for a doctor. Service to
humankind should be the ultimate motto of a doctor. Patient satisfaction is an important and commonly used indicator for measuring the quality in health care. Patient the satisfaction affects clinical outcomes, patient retention and medical malpractice claims. It affects the timely, efficient and patient-centred delivery of quality health care.
Duties of a doctor
Doctors have been trained to believe that we make decisions based on symptoms and science and that personal characteristics don’t impact doctors. Doctors do give different care to different groups of patients. When a doctor’s ability to act in the best interests of a person or group could be affected by relationships with other people or groups, then a conflict of interest exists. Even when doctors think they are acting without bias, their judgements and actions may still be influenced by conflict of interest.
The doctor-patient relationship is a central part of health care and the
practice of medicine. The doctor-patient relationship forms one of the foundations of contemporary medical ethics.
A patient must have confidence in the competence of the doctor’s and must feel that they
Can confide in him.
The quality of the patient-doctor relationship is important to both parties. The doctor and patient’s values and perspectives about disease, life and time available play a role in building up this relationship. A strong relationship between the doctor and patient will lead to better quality information about the patient’s disease and better health care for the patient and the family.
Consultation with a trusted doctor will have beneficial effects irrespective of any other therapy given and is considered to be the core element in the ethical principles of medicine. The doctor-patient relationship is regarded as a fiduciary relationship, in which mutual trust and confidence are essential.
A doctor is held to a standard of medical care defined by the accepted standards of practice in his area of practice.
Patients want to see doctors as someone who is trying their best to help them. They do not see them as agents of government, insurance companies or institutions. To pursue the patient’s good, the patient must trust the doctor with private information and with his body.
Trust in the healer is essential to healing itself. Most importantly, trust in the doctor caring for them is of great importance to patients.
Listen to your doctor for the sake of your health.
