Rajkumar Hirani’s Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Sanjay Dutt biopic has been shattering records at the box office left, right and centre. Not only Ranbir has earned immense appreciation for the film, his supporting characters Vicky Kaushal and Paresh Rawal are also being praised a lot. Even though the father-son relationship and the bond of friendship that has been shown in the movie is appreciated by many, there is a section of critics that slammed the film based on Sanjay Dutt’s life as an attempt to “whitewash the actor’s image.”
Rajkumar Hirani has been accused of painting a favourable image of Sanjay Dutt in the Ranbir Kapoor starrer. A large section of the audience and critics think that several aspects of Dutt’s life were kept away from the movie. Now, finally, Sanjay Dutt has reacted to the allegations of Sanju being a “propaganda” film by Hirani in order to improve Dutt’s image.
Speaking to India Today, Sanjay Dutt said: “I don’t think anybody would spend Rs. 30-40 crore to change my image. That is too much of money. Whatever they say is their point of view. I have told the truth. The truth has been accepted by India. I am happy that people have accepted my life and learnt from it.”
When asked if it’s the real Dutt that has been portrayed in the film by Ranbir, the actor said, “‘Why do you think so many people love me?’ There is nothing dark about me. Growing up the way I did – it was no different than a usual teenager or youngster. There was nothing special about being Mr Sunil Dutt’s son. I made mistakes – a little more. I even went to jail for it which I don’t regret.”
Speaking about reliving his life through the film, Sanjay Dutt told India Today: “It was difficult to relive that. I was trying to hold back my emotions in the theatre. It is difficult to relive your life. After the film ended, I just broke down. I just couldn’t believe it.”
Sanju has been breaking records at the ticket counters and is expected to enter the Rs 300 crore club soon. The current collection of the Ranbir Kapoor starrer is over Rs 265 crore. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film also stars Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Sonam Kapoor, Jim Sarbh, Anushka Sharma and Karishma Tanna.
On the professional front, Ranbir Kapoor is now shooting for Brahmastra and Sanjay Dutt will be next seen in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3.
