Tamil actor and filmmaker R. Parthiban has issued a public apology after a remark he made about actress Trisha Krishnan during an awards ceremony sparked criticism online. The incident took place at the popular Galatta Awards, where Parthiban was participating in a rapid-fire segment on stage. A video clip from the event recently surfaced on social media, leading to strong reactions from fans and the actress herself.

During the rapid-fire session, Trisha’s image appeared on the screen. Audience members reportedly began chanting Kundavai, referencing the actress’s popular character from the film Ponniyin Selvan: I, directed by Mani Ratnam. While responding quickly during the segment, Parthiban said, “This Kundavai should stay home for a few days. It would be good. Don’t let her go out.”

The comment was met with applause from the audience at the venue. However, once the video spread online, many viewers criticized the remark and called it inappropriate. Following the backlash, Parthiban shared an audio message on his X account explaining that the comment was made unintentionally during the fast-paced session. He said that while he was thinking about how to respond, the audience started shouting Kundavai.

Playing on the character’s name in the moment, he made the remark without considering how it might be interpreted. According to Parthiban, a close friend later told him that the statement could be misunderstood. He then reportedly asked the event organizers not to publish that part of the segment. However, someone recorded the moment and the video eventually appeared online.

In his statement, Parthiban acknowledged that the comment had hurt some people and expressed regret. He said, “Sometimes mistakes happen unintentionally. I realize that this has hurt some people, and I sincerely apologize. I do not want to cause trouble.” The actor-director also emphasized that he supports women’s freedom and empowerment. He added that during his visits to colleges, he often speaks about equality and encourages women to live freely without unnecessary restrictions.
