“Sufi Music is gaining more popularity among youth because Sufi music is the most popular expression of emotions today. It has transformed in a way where it is used to play up romantic love till now. It’s full of passion and so speaks to a young audience. Sufi follows a certain pattern and beat that is very similar to Western music. It lends itself easily to remixes. Today’s Sufi is more interesting with contemporary sounds but still conveys deeper meanings. And that is where youth finds a connection with Sufi music.” said Vicky keyboardist in Rocknaama Band.

Woman’s Era interviewed one of the members of Rocknaama band Shaheen. She is the lead vocalist of the band. This is the exclusive interview about the band and their journey from Rocknaama to Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.

Tell us something about your journey, your key members and its start.

I started my journey six years back. But that time I was performing as freelancer. Then I met Vicky three years back. And we started working together. We performed as duo set-up and continued for two years. Later, we decided to form a band. We started auditioning for band and after few months, we finally met Arghya Bannerjee (Drummer), Kamal (percussionist) and Puneet Saluja (guitarist). Now, the band is performing at various famous places in DELHI-NCR and doing really great.

How’s your experience in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa?

My experience of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa was really interesting. I gave auditions from Delhi and got through Mumbai auditions. I met so many good musicians and made so many friends. It was a great chance for me to perform on such big platform and in front of big names of industry. I got through in top 100 and then top 24 and then I competed for top 12. I couldn’t make it further, but it was a wonderful experience!

Tell us something about your Band Rocknaama and your members.

Our band Rocknaama is as unique as its name. There are so many bands but the only difference you make is by your music. We also do Bollywood like other bands but our music makes it different and covers almost every genre of Hindi music. If we talk about the band members, everybody is experienced player in their fields and has their own style to play instruments and that adds to the strength of our band.

What genre you cover normally?

We do not cover any particular genre. We sing all kind of music, starting from semi-classical to Sufi, Punjabi, old, dance numbers to all Bollywood stuff.

What Rocknaama means and how is it different?

To be honest, it doesn’t have any literal meaning. But the name is a fusion of English and Urdu…like our music. As I said earlier, our style of music makes us different from other bands. We do music covers but with our own arrangement and with our unique style.

Scintillating Sufi and Rock Fusion

Which singer inspires you the most?

I am not inspired by only one singer because singing and performing are two different things. I like Lataji, I follow her singing style when I sing soft music. I like Rekha Bhardwaj, I like her tonal quality and Sunidhi Chauhan. I follow her style of performing on stage. My inspiration on stage comes from different people, but if you want to one-word music, my Guruji is my inspiration.

Share your views on Fusion Music?

Fusion music, I think it’s not only singing western with Indian but fusion is when you play two or more than two different kinds of music genres that make it fusion.

Scintillating Sufi and Rock Fusion

Being a band are you planning to do western or just stick to Bollywood?

I think we will stick to what we are doing and what we are good at. But we have never stopped experimenting with our music. We follow the Western style in so many songs but the women do purely Western.

Any message to Woman’s Era readers?

My message for all the readers of Woman’s Era, especially for all the beautiful women out there. Keep following your dreams. Nobody can stop you except you. So, keep working on what you want to do in life and keep loving Rocknaama.
