They were testing the waters to see if their friendship and chemistry could actually be the same when they meet face to face. So they decided to meet in London, where Anand lived and Sonam had fittings with a designer.
According to Sonam, she was wearing ‘gross’ T-shirt and Pyjamas and Anand was in his gym clothes. They spent the whole day talking and walking in London. When asked about her first date, Sonam reveals “I was apparently wearing the worst sneakers he had ever seen. I keep telling him that he fell in love with me despite my bad sneaker game… That day, walking and talking in London, I knew he was the love of my life. He apparently knew the first time we spoke on the phone… It was just so easy.”
Sonam believes that despite being a stark contrast between the two of them, they also share many similarities. She says “He comes from a business background, so that’s alien to me. I’m the third generation in a film family. So there’s a lot to talk about, a lot to discover about each other, but we have a lot of similarities.”
Sonam is known for her impeccable fashion sense and is hailed as the fashion icon of Bollywood. Anand, on the other hand, is the founder of clothing label Bhane and sneaker store Veg Non Veg. Remembering their early frindship, Anand reveals “The first time we met, we talked about our respective work. I was just struck by the fact that I could speak to her so openly about everything. We were chatting on Snapchat one night and she said, ‘Stop texting, just call me.’ And we spoke for two hours that night… Our friendship started over superficial things like vegan chocolates and sneakers but soon we were having deeper conversations.”
They shared many candid shots from their wedding. Sonam’s solo portraits, Anand and Sonam’s candid pictures and the bridesmaids enjoying. There were many unseen and exclusive shots that were revealed in the latest July issue of Vogue India.
Since it was Sonam’s wedding, naturally the wedding trousseau was the most talked about thing during her wedding. She chose popular artists like Anamika Khanna, Anuradha Vakil, Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla, Anahita Shroff Adjania and others. Although Sonam usually dresses in high-street couture, for her wedding outfit she chose traditional red and gold colour palette. She collaborated with Ahmedabad-based designer Anuradha Wakil for her bridal lehenga. And she sure dazzled in red and gold maheshwari silk lehenga.
“I’ve known Anuradha for many years. She’s a good friend of my mom. I fell in love with her clothes, so I’d asked her to design for Saawariya—probably the only film she’s ever done or will do. I don’t know anyone who understands Indian garments, textiles and embroidery as she does. I’d always tell her, ‘You are going to make my wedding lehenga. When—and if—I get married, you will.’ And I didn’t forget that,” adds Sonam.
Did you notice they pretty gold lotus motifs on Sonam’s wedding lehenga? Well, she specifically asked the designer Anuradha Wakil to add lotus motifs on her lehenga as she loves lotuses. Anand, who plays basketball, cannot wear a wedding ring. So he got himself tattoed on his ring-finger from a New York-based tattoo artist Keith ‘Bang Bang’ McCurdy.
Sonam’s engagement ring was designed by Tarang Arora which is a mellow Golconda diamond in a gold setting, more liquid and citrine-esque than blinding. Sonam adds “I didn’t want a big fancy diamond. I wanted something that I wouldn’t feel embarrassed to wear all the time, I didn’t want something loud or showy. Anand sourced the stone—he loves saying it. He says it’s a meetha colour. It’s a little yellow, so it looks old and pretty.”
Sonam revealed that she didn’t want a luxurious wedding. That is why she had a close-knit ceremonies at home with family and friends in Mumbai. She had her mehendi at home, Sangeet at her new house in Mumbai and the wedding at her aunt’s place. The wedding reception was held in The Leela, which is owned by her best friend Samyukta Nair and co-incidentally Samyukta’s father is good friends with Anand’s father.
