Actor Sonu Sood has criticised BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut over her controversial “Generation Gutter” remarks directed at a section of Gen Z protesters, saying it would be “very shameful” if she had indeed made such comments. Stressing the importance of respecting young people, Sonu said public figures should think carefully before speaking, as their words carry significant influence.
The controversy stems from Kangana’s comments during the ongoing nationwide protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which began over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination and have since expanded into a broader movement demanding accountability and education reforms. Kangana had referred to some protesters as belonging to “Generation Gutter”, alleging that they had used abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother. The remarks triggered widespread backlash, with critics accusing her of unfairly stereotyping an entire generation.
Speaking to reporters, Sonu distanced himself from Kangana’s comments and defended the younger generation. “It is very shameful if she said that,” he remarked, adding that people should think before making public statements. According to the actor, India’s youth deserve encouragement rather than insults because they are the very people who shape the success of actors, artists and public personalities. “Young people are the ones who make actors,” he said, urging celebrities to acknowledge and respect their contribution.
Sonu also highlighted the responsibility that comes with public life, saying every statement made by influential personalities is scrutinised and can affect millions. He suggested that disagreements should be expressed with restraint and dignity rather than through sweeping generalisations. Without directly commenting on the politics surrounding the protests, Sonu maintained that respectful dialogue is always preferable to divisive rhetoric.
Kangana has, however, defended her position. In a video shared on social media, she clarified that she was not referring to all members of Gen Z but only to those who allegedly used obscene language during the protests. She argued that democratic demonstrations are legitimate, but abuse and personal insults should have no place in public discourse. The BJP MP also questioned whether parents would approve of such language being used by their children.
Despite the clarification, criticism has continued to mount. Earlier, author Shobhaa De had described Kangana’s comments as insensitive and argued that Bollywood was increasingly out of touch with Gen Z. CJP leaders have also rejected Kangana’s explanation, saying her remarks reflected a disconnect from the concerns of students protesting over examination reforms.
Sonu’s intervention has added another prominent voice to the debate, reinforcing the view that celebrities should exercise caution while commenting on sensitive public issues. His remarks have been widely welcomed on social media, where many users praised him for advocating respect towards young people amid an increasingly polarised national conversation. The exchange between the two actors has further intensified discussions around celebrity accountability, political expression and the evolving relationship between public figures and India’s youth.
