Life of Legendary Dilip Kumar

Dilip Kumar was a legendary actor, film producer, and philanthropist. His original name was Mohammad Yusuf Khan born on 11 December 1922.

Referred to as ‘The Tragedy King’ and ‘The First Khan’. He has made a special place in Hindi cinema. Dilip Saheb holds the record for the most wins for the Filmfare Award for the Best Actor. And was also the inaugural recipient of the award.

His career

Kumar debuted as an actor in Jwar Bhata(1944), produced by Bombay Talkies. He has introduced a distinct form of method acting technique to the cinema.

Dilip Saheb has worked in over 65 films and played a variety of roles. Few movies done by the actor are Andaz(1949), Aan (1952), the epic historical Mughal-e-Aazam(1960), Ganga Jamuna (1961), and Ram and Shyam (1967), and many more hits.

His Relationships

Kumar had a long relationship with the actress Madhubala but never married her. He married actress Saira Banu, 22 years younger than him in 1966.

In 1980, he married Asma Sahiba, a socialite in Hyderabad. But this marriage did not last long and ended up in January 1983.

1. Kumar’s close friends were Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand.

2. In 1961, he produced the first and last film of his career- Ganga Jamuna.

3. In 1962, he was offered a British film Lawrence Of Arabia which he rejected.

4. In 1970, he was starred alongside his wife Saira Banu for the first time in the movie, Gopi.

5. In1997, Dilip Kumar was honored with ‘Nishan-e-Imtiaz (highest civilian award in Pakistan) by the Government of Pakistan.

6. He was a member of Rajya sabha during 2000-2006 on the Congress’ ticket.

7. On his 89th birthday in 2011, he launched his Twitter account.

His family

The parents of the actor were Lala Ghulam Sarwar and Ayesha Begum. They lived in a small house in Peshawar, Pakistan with his siblings.

He had five brothers : Nasir Khan, Ehsan Khan, Aslam Khan, Noor Mohammed, and Ayub Sarwar. Dilip Kumar had six sisters: Fauzia Khan, Sakina Khan, Taj Khan, Farida Khan, Saeeda Khan, and Akhtar Asif.
