The Complete Guide To Understanding PCOS!

What Is PCOS?

(Poly=many, cystic= having cysts)

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder observed in women of reproductive age.

Ovaries are the storehouse of eggs in the female body and are full of mini immature eggs. These eggs grow together to form that one mature egg that will ovulate during the menstrual cycle. But in PCOS, the eggs fail to grow into mature eggs. As a result, there is no ovulation. Thus all the mini eggs (which are fluid-filled follicles) appear like cysts in the ovaries, hence the name polycystic!

A woman suffering from PCOS produces more male hormones (androgens) which cause a hormonal imbalance in her body. Such women either fail to ovulate every month or ovulate rarely. In addition to this, the imbalance leads to irregular periods or no periods at all.

Causes Of PCOS and who can have it?

There is no exact known cause of PCOS. However, you are at a higher risk if you are obese, overweight or your mom or sister is already PCOS positive. Although your ovaries can be polycystic any time after puberty, it is more common in teen girls and young women.

As per The PCOS Society, India, at least 10% of Indian women have PCOS.
