Varun Dhawan has cemented his place in Bollywood over the last decade, delivering both box office successes and critically acclaimed performances in films like Badlapur and October. While the actor may now have the experience to back his opinions, he recently recounted a moment early in his career when he was sharply put in his place by his father, veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, for interfering in his work.
In a recent interview, Varun recalled that his initial foray into the industry was as an assistant to his father before he made his acting debut. The incident took place on the set of one of his father’s films in Delhi. Varun, still young and learning the ropes, attempted to interject and suggest a different way to take a particular shot—a move that did not sit well with the highly experienced director.
“When it comes to work, my father sets aside all personal relationships…he has his own way of doing things,” Varun explained. He detailed the moment, admitting, “I remember once, during my internship on one of his films, I must have made a mistake, and I was suggesting how a shot should be done. But that wasn’t his vision, and I wasn’t at a level where I could say anything. I was too young.”
David Dhawan’s response was firm and clear, drawing a boundary between their personal and professional lives: “Then he said, ‘Jab tum apni film banaoge ya jab ek mukaam pe pahuch jaaoge tab karlena ye sab (When you make your own film or reach a certain stature, then do all this).'”
Varun admitted that he was initially disappointed by his father’s blunt reaction but soon realised the wisdom behind it. “Of course, I felt disappointed at first, but he was right,” he said, reflecting on the incident. He noted that their creative relationship has evolved significantly since then: “However, now, our creative discussions have become very productive.”
