Today, we talk about women empowerment, people’s changing attitude towards women of the country and importance of women in the society. Ever wondered why? It is because of women like Geeta and Babita Phogat, who wrestled all their way in this championship to do something for their country, to prove that women too can achieve and they are no less than the men.
Coming from a small place called Bhiwani in Haryana, Geeta and Babita are daughters of wrestler and senior Olympics coach, Mahavir Singh Phogat. The two were portrayed in Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ recently. The movie was a big hit at the box office and the collections have reached more than 600 crores. The movie is still running at the theatres and people are loving the inspiring story of the Phogat family.
For all those who haven’t watched the movie, Mahavir Singh Phogat wished to have a boy and wanted to train him in wrestling to win a gold for India, something he dreamed to do in his life but couldn’t do because of lack of support from family. Mahavir was blessed with 4 daughters and he decided to train his daughters Geeta and Babita. Their journey was not an easy one. Despite of strong opposition for the same from family and neighbours, Mahavir kept training his daughters and soon he was successful in making them International champions. Geeta Phogat became the first woman to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2010. Babita Phogat won a gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2014.
The career graph of the Phogat sisters has been amazing. The two have won a number of International championships.
With their sheer dedication, the two have changed the mindset of people towards women in Haryana. Where the girl child was once considered a curse, today, with daughters like Geeta and Babita making their parents proud across the world, people wish to have daughters like them in their home. We are really proud of these two women who made a difference and stood strong for the nation.
Long back, Geeta and Babita came for Aamir’s show, ‘Satyamev Jayte’. The two shared a lot from their journey. Watch the video here:
