What Is ‘GREEN FUNGUS?’ Know Symptoms And More

After witnessing rising cases of ‘Black’, ‘Yellow’ and ‘White’ fungus, now the first-ever case of ‘Green Fungus’ has been reported from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, on Monday.  A 34-year-old Covid-19 survivor was diagnosed with green fungus infection and was airlifted to Mumbai for treatment.

Black Fungus has already been labeled as a pandemic by many states in the country. Now with this new version of fungal infection, medical experts are all the more worried. The patient detected with the first-ever case of Green Fungus underwent COVID – 19 treatment for two months before he came back complaining of fever and nosebleeds within two weeks of his discharge.

Dr. Ravi Dosi the head of the Department of Chest Diseases at the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) in Indore told the press, “He came in for tests and we found that he is infected with green fungus.” He was airlifted to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai on Monday, for further treatment.

According to Apoorva Tiwari, District Data Manager of Indore’s Health Department, “He was being treated in Indore’s Aurobindo hospital for the last one and a half month. He had a 90 percent lung infection. During diagnosis, the green fungus was detected in his lungs which is different from Mucormycosis or Black Fungus. This possibly is the first green fungus case in the country.”

What Is Green Fungus?

Green fungus, also known as ‘Aspergillosis,’ is an infection caused by Aspergillus, a common mold that lives indoors and outdoors. Aspergillosis is a relatively uncommon infection and affects the lungs. However, people with low or weak immune systems or lung diseases are at a higher risk of developing health problems due to Aspergillus.

Symptoms of Green Fungus

  • High Fever
  • Nose Bleeding
  • Severe Weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Severe Cough

According to Dr. Dosi, more research is needed on whether the nature of green fungus infection in people who have recovered from COVID-19 is different from other patients.
