Inside the high walls of District Jail, Dehradun, a soft melody plays every morning the signature tune of Tinka Tinka Jail Radio. The tune, composed by Dr. Suchit Narang, marks the start of something remarkable: the inmates’ own radio station. Along with Rohit and Arun, who are also permanent members of the radio team, Dr. Narang has become a symbol of creativity and reform in the prison. These three voices now fill the air with stories, songs, and reflections that bring hope to hundreds of inmates. What was once a place of silence now resonates with sound, rhythm, and the possibility of change.
The journey of Tinka Tinka Jail Radio in Dehradun began in June 2021, when Pavan Kothari, then Jailor of the district jail, reached out to Dr. Vartika Nanda, founder of the Tinka Tinka Foundation, known for pioneering prison radio initiatives across India. Inspired by the success of similar projects in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh the Foundation collaborated with the Uttarakhand prison administration to set up the state’s first inmate-run radio station. Auditions were held, training sessions followed, and soon, a group of inmates learned the art of anchoring, scripting, and sound production — transforming the prison into a space of learning and expression. Since its launch, the Dehradun jail radio has become much more than an entertainment platform. It serves as a bridge of communication in the prison broadcasting music, poems, interviews, and motivational talks that uplift the spirits of the inmates. The radio has given them not only a voice but also a purpose, teaching skills that build confidence and prepare them for life beyond the prison gates. The Tinka Tinka Foundation continues to mentor the inmates, ensuring that the initiative remains sustainable and creative, while officials like Vimla Gunjyal, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, lend their support to make this reform model a lasting success.
Today, Tinka Tinka Jail Radio stands as a shining example of how art and communication can transform lives, even behind bars. The signature tune composed by Dr. Narang has become more than just music — it is a sound of freedom, resilience, and second chances. As Rohit, Arun, and Dr. Narang continue to run the station, their voices echo far beyond the prison walls, reminding us that hope and creativity can thrive anywhere — even in the most unlikely places.
Interestingly, these stories of change have got a very special place in RADIO IN PRISON, published by National Book Trust, India, Government of India.
