‘AI Could Result In Loss of Thinking Ability of Kids”, Dia Mirza on Raising Eco-Conscious Kids & Mindset of Gen Z

Actor and environmental activist Dia Mirza has consistently spoken about sustainability and climate action, not just in India, but on global platforms as well. During a recent visit to Delhi, the 44-year-old Hyderabad-born star spoke exclusively about parenting, Gen Z, and the growing impact of artificial intelligence. Best known for her performance in Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein, Dia opened up about how she raises her children, Samaira and Aavyan, with environmental values not through lectures, but through example.

Talking about her five-year-old son Aavyan, Dia shared a heartwarming anecdote. She revealed that during a recent birthday party, her son was offered a tiger-shaped plastic balloon. However, he politely refused, saying, “Uncle, it’s made of plastic. I won’t take it.” For Dia, this moment was a small victory. She explained that she hasn’t formally taught her children about environmental protection. Instead, she demonstrates it through her daily actions.

According to her, children learn best by observing and said, “I can’t teach my child anything; I can only demonstrate. My choices and my actions tell him what he should choose and what he should do.” Dia shared how sustainability is woven into her household routine by composting household waste, repairing broken items instead of discarding them, avoiding single-use plastic, and teaching gratitude to her kids, thanking God, farmers, and even the person who cooks the food.

She added that her son sees her carrying her vacuum cleaner around like a mad woman to ensure cleanliness and responsible waste management. These small everyday practices, she believes, create lifelong awareness. When asked about today’s Gen Z generation, Dia responded with a smile. She described Gen Z as very interesting and very emotional, pointing out that they are far more aware of mental health and emotional well-being than previous generations.

However, she also noted that while many Gen Z individuals are solution-oriented and committed to social causes, some prefer shortcuts and lack patience. Laughing, she added that she has one Gen Z child and another from Generation Alpha at home. She expressed concern over how AI is currently being misused and how it may disrupt critical thinking among younger generations and said, “AI generates every answer in a split second. How will children learn to use their own brains? They could lose their ability to think for themselves.”
