AR Rahman’s Daughters Break Silence Amid Online Backlash

Music maestro A. R. Rahman has found himself at the centre of a social media storm after his remarks on alleged communal bias in the Hindi film industry sparked sharp criticism. As the debate intensified, his daughters Khatija Rahman and Raheema Rahman stepped in to defend him, calling out what they described as character assassination.

‘Disagree, Don’t Disgrace’: A Message of Support

Both daughters reposted an Instagram note by Malayalam composer Kailas Menon, accompanied by the line, “Disagree, don’t disgrace.”The message underlined that while disagreement is valid in a democracy, personal attacks, abuse, and targeting someone’s faith or identity are not.

Menon’s note criticised the tone of the backlash, arguing that dismissing Rahman’s decades-long contribution to Indian music crosses the line from criticism into hate.

What Sparked the A.R. Rahman Controversy

The controversy began after Rahman, in a recent interview, suggested that changes over the past eight years — including shifts in power and possibly communal dynamics — may have affected the kind of work coming his way in Bollywood. His remarks quickly went viral, drawing polarised reactions online.

While some backed the composer’s right to voice his experience, others accused him of politicising art and attacked his credibility.

As the criticism mounted, Rahman released a video clarification stating that he never intended to hurt sentiments. He reiterated that India is his home and inspiration. He clarified his music has always celebrated unity, diversity, and cultural harmony.

Family Stands United

Khatija reacted to the shared message with emojis expressing support, while Raheema also reposted it, signalling solidarity with their father. Rahman’s son, AR Ameen, has not publicly commented on the issue so far.
