Kiran Rao Suffering From Chikungunya, Shared Her Recovery Glimpse On Social Media

Acclaimed Bollywood filmmaker Kiran Rao has revealed that she is currently battling chikungunya. The director shared the health update with fans on Instagram, giving a glimpse into her recovery journey and the love she has received from friends and family. On Tuesday, Kiran took to Instagram Stories and posted a cheerful photo of herself resting on a sofa. Despite being unwell, she was seen smiling at the camera, while her pet cat sat near her feet.

In her caption, she wrote that she has contracted chikungunya and jokingly referred to her cat as an “excellent paramedic” who is closely monitoring her fever. In another story, she shared a snapshot of greeting cards sent by friends, along with her AirPods and a book she is currently reading. She mentioned that she is slowly recovering but warned fans about the intense joint pain associated with the infection. She urged everyone to take proper precautions.

This is not the first health challenge Kiran has faced recently. In December 2025, she underwent appendicitis surgery and had shared hospital pictures at the time, thanking her doctors and well-wishers for their support. Kiran Rao made her directorial debut with Dhobi Ghat, which received critical acclaim for its unique storytelling. She also produced several successful films including Peepli Live and Delhi Belly.

She met actor Aamir Khan during the making of Lagaan, and later went on to produce major blockbusters such as Dangal, Talaash, and Secret Superstar. In 2024, Kiran returned to direction with Laapataa Ladies, which garnered widespread appreciation from critics and audiences. The film starred Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goyal, and Sparsh Srivastava, with Ravi Kishan in a supporting role.

Although the film collected around ₹21.11 crore at the box office, it gained massive popularity after its OTT release. It was also selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars but did not make it to the final shortlist. Kiran Rao married Aamir Khan in December 2005. This was Aamir’s second marriage after his divorce from Reena Dutta in 2002. The couple welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan, via surrogacy in December 2011.
