All About ‘Varanasi’ movie
Priyanka Chopra is set to return to Indian cinema after a seven-year break with SS Rajamouli’s highly anticipated film Varanasi. Starring alongside Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran, the big-budget project marks her comeback to the Indian screen. The film is currently in production and is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027, worldwide. On Mahesh Babu’s 51st birthday on Sunday, filmmaker SS Rajamouli unveiled the actor’s first look from the film, sharing two striking pictures and a special message online. “Fierce isn’t his only shade… RUDHRA in Varanasi.”
Earlier this month, a leaked video from the film showed Mahesh Babu in a gripping action sequence. Covered in blood, the actor was seen walking towards a ghat before stepping into the river, apparently after a fierce confrontation. The footage quickly spread online, drawing significant attention from fans and movie enthusiasts alike. The film is reportedly nearing completion, with shooting progressing steadily. Director SS Rajamouli recently revealed that nearly 80 per cent of the movie has already been filmed. He also shared that the story unfolds across multiple continents and different time periods, promising a grand adventure spanning locations and eras worldwide.
“The journey of Varanasi goes from Varanasi to Antarctica, then to Africa, then travels back in time to Ancient Rome, and finally returns to Varanasi,” Rajamouli stated in a recent interview with European magazine Tsounami. The filmmaker also revealed that although the teaser has already been released, he intentionally avoided showing too much of the story, keeping key plot details hidden from audiences. “We wanted to give audiences a glimpse of the experience without revealing the story,” he said. Rajamouli further revealed that Varanasi will be the first non-English film to be shot entirely using IMAX cameras.
