Belly Piercing, Boundaries & Bias? Shweta Bachchan Opens Up About Parenting

Shweta Bachchan Nanda, daughter of Bollywood icons Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, recently opened up about how she approaches raising her two children, daughter Navya Naveli Nanda and son Agastya Nanda. In a candid conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt, Shweta admitted that she hasn’t always treated her children equally and explained that she has been stricter with Navya than with Agastya.

Why She’s Stricter With Her Daughter

When asked if she had been harsher on Navya than on her brother, Shweta openly admitted that she had. She said that because “the world isn’t easy on women,” she feels the need to be more vigilant and cautious with her daughter. She also noted that their personalities differ — describing Agastya as more of an “old soul” and Navya as somewhat “naïve,” which influences how she guides them.

The Belly Piercing Incident

One of the most talked-about stories Shweta shared was about a disagreement with Navya over a belly piercing. Shweta said this was the “only time we had a really big disagreement.” Navya had gone ahead with the piercing despite objections, and in a moment of anger, Shweta removed it herself, underscoring her protective instincts as a mother.

Navya’s Strengths and Family Resemblance

Reflecting on Navya’s personality, Shweta pointed out that her daughter takes after her grandmother, Jaya Bachchan, in terms of conviction and confidence. Unlike Shweta — who describes herself as shy — Navya is comfortable speaking publicly and standing up for causes she believes in, traits Shweta admires.
