Karan Johar Is Revisiting Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna On OTT Platform With New Cast Soon, Deets Inside

In 2006, when Karan Johar released Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, it didn’t just arrive as another Bollywood drama, it ignited one of the most intense debates in Indian cinema. Tackling the taboo subject of extramarital affairs, the film featured an ensemble cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, and Abhishek Bachchan. At the time of its release, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna faced sharp criticism for challenging the sanctity of marriage, an institution deeply rooted in Indian culture.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna To Come On OTT

The film explored emotional dissatisfaction within relationships and presented infidelity not as a black-and-white moral issue, but as a complex emotional reality. For many viewers in 2006, this perspective felt uncomfortable and even unacceptable. However, over the years, perceptions have evolved. Made on a budget of ₹50 crore, the film went on to earn approximately ₹113 crore worldwide, a significant achievement for its time.

Despite the backlash, audiences were drawn to its layered storytelling, memorable performances, and its haunting tagline, “A love… that shattered every bond.” Nearly two decades after the film’s release, Karan Johar is revisiting this bold story, this time for the OTT audience. In a recent interaction, he confirmed that Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is being adapted into a long-form web series.

According to Johar, the idea is to explore the narrative in greater depth, something that wasn’t entirely possible within the constraints of a feature film. He acknowledged that when the movie first released, public opinion was deeply divided, with many questioning how infidelity could be portrayed with empathy. Johar candidly shared that people often asked him, “How can you justify infidelity?” to which he responded, “How can you justify something that has already become so commonplace?”

He also recalled a striking incident from a pre-release screening, where a couple walked out of the theatre upon realizing a controversial scene was not a dream sequence. For Johar, this reaction underscored a larger truth: audiences are often unwilling to confront uncomfortable realities on screen, even if they mirror real life. While details about the OTT platform and casting remain under wraps, the filmmaker confirmed that the series will be released soon, promising a deeper and more nuanced exploration of modern relationships.
