Nicole Kidman Recalls ‘Struggling’ After Divorce With Tom Cruise: Felt Devastated When…
Nicole Kidman received her first Oscar in 2003 for the film “The Hours.” She portrayed the role of author Virginia Woolf and starred alongside Julienne Moore and Meryl Streep. This was soon after she and Tom Cruise had divorced, and even winning the Academy Award statuette couldn’t stop her feeling the worst. “I ate alone in my hotel room,” she languished.
Personal Life Was Doomed
The 56-year-old dishes about the phase she was in — felt like her life was ruined, “yet my acting career was going so well.” However, she thought it was the worst period of her life. “Top Gun” star Tom Cruise and “Moulin Rouge” actress Kidman were the golden couple of Hollywood, married for 11 years before they filed for divorce in 2001. They adopted a girl and a boy, Isabella and Connor.
In author Dave Karger’s newly published book “50 Oscar Nights,” she speaks about her sorrow. When she went up to receive her award, “Gladiator” lead Russel Crowe asked her not to cry, but she ended up doing that. On the stage, during her acceptance speech, she was distraught and broke down in tears.
Nicole Kidman Ate Alone on the Hotel Floor
Nicole didn’t stay back for the Vanity Fair after-party that night, according to People. She got holed up in her hotel room and ordered takeout instead. “I sat on the floor of the Beverly Hills Hotel eating French fries, and I went to bed alone.” Although she had her family, she was craving for love. “That moment made me realize I had to love again,” she confessed.
Because she thought that’s how it is supposed to be — “Share your achievements and say, ‘This is ours.’ I needed to find my love.” Just as fate would have it, Nicole Kidman met country music singer and fellow Australian Keith Urban at an LA event of G’Day USA in 2005. The “Bombshell” star married him the next year, and they have two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.
Showing Off Awards Is Not Humble
“I am not a big party girl,” she said and wanted to skip the party, But other cast members and friends asked her to “just walk through” carrying the Oscar award. “I thought it was like gloating; it didn’t feel humble.” But after some convincing, she pranced around, still emotional and shaking to the core.
“I didn’t enjoy it and was almost apologetic,” which, in retrospect, is so stupid, she quips. But now, if she wins the Academy Award again, she is ready to party all night. “I’m telling you, I’d be out for 24 hours.”
