Veteran actress Aruna Irani and filmmaker Kuku Kohli shared a relationship that remained largely private for years. Following Kuku Kohli’s death at the age of 77, old interviews detailing their unusual love story have once again come into focus.
Aruna Irani had revealed in a 2022 interview that when she first met Kuku Kohli on a film set, she did not know that he was already married and had children. According to the actress, their relationship began with frequent disagreements rather than romance.
Recalling their first meeting, Aruna said that Kuku would often make actors wait on the sets until Dharmendra arrived. This frustrated her because she was also working on several other films. Their initial equation, she recalled, was more of a “love-hate relationship.” Gradually, however, Kuku began comforting her whenever she was upset, and their professional relationship turned into something more personal.
Aruna claimed that Kuku did not tell her about his marriage when they first met. She said that this was how she eventually fell in love with him without knowing the complete circumstances surrounding his personal life. She also explained that she had avoided discussing their relationship publicly for years because Kuku was already married and had daughters.
However, Aruna later gave a somewhat different account in another interview, saying that she was aware of Kuku’s first marriage and that his wife would sometimes visit the sets with their children. She explained that she deliberately kept her marriage private because she did not want to hurt his first family.
Aruna and Kuku eventually married in 1990. Kuku remained connected to his first family, including his two daughters, Pooja and Karishma, from his marriage to Rita Kohli. Aruna also chose not to have children with Kuku, explaining in earlier interviews that she did not want a child to experience the emotional complications of having a father who was already committed to another family.
Their relationship remained a subject of public curiosity, but Aruna largely stayed away from discussing it in detail. Her comments over the years offer different glimpses into how the relationship developed and why she chose to keep many aspects of their married life private.
Kuku Kohli, best known for films such as Phool Aur Kaante, Suhaag and Haqeeqat, died on August 25, 2026, reportedly after suffering a heart attack. He is survived by Aruna Irani and his two daughters from his first marriage.
