Rajshri Deshpande Says She Refuses to Be Defined by ‘Sacred Games’ Morphed Clip Trauma: ‘I’ve Moved On’

Actor Rajshri Deshpande has opened up once again about the disturbing aftermath of her intimate scenes from Sacred Games being morphed and circulated online without consent, saying she is now exhausted by constantly being pulled back into that painful chapter of her life.

The actor, who played Subhadra in Netflix’s groundbreaking 2018 crime drama, revealed that while the controversy deeply affected her emotionally at the time, she no longer wants her identity and career to remain trapped in that incident years later.

Rajshri became one of the breakout performers of Sacred Games, starring alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Saif Ali Khan. Her portrayal of Gaitonde’s wife Subhadra was widely praised by critics and audiences. However, one intimate scene from the series later became the centre of unwanted controversy after edited and morphed clips allegedly began circulating on pornographic websites and social media platforms.

The actor has previously spoken about how the manipulated clips led to her being labelled a “porn star” online, despite the footage being illegally altered and distributed without her consent.

Now, years later, Rajshri says she wants to move beyond that narrative completely.

“I have moved on. I am tired of talking about it,” the actor told NDTV while discussing how media conversations around her still frequently return to the same controversy instead of focusing on her broader body of work.

According to Rajshri, there are far more important stories, performances and issues she wants audiences to engage with today rather than constantly revisiting a traumatic incident from nearly eight years ago.

“There is much more work to be addressed and worked on, so many more stories to tell,” she reportedly said while expressing frustration over still being introduced primarily as the “Sacred Games actor.”

Her comments have reignited conversations around cyber exploitation, digital consent and the way women actors are disproportionately targeted after intimate scenes in films or streaming projects.

Many social media users pointed out that while multiple people are involved in creating such scenes, female actors often become the primary targets of moral judgement and online harassment. Rajshri herself had earlier questioned why only she faced scrutiny while male actors, directors, editors and creators associated with the same scene largely escaped criticism.

The actor had previously stated that nobody questioned Nawazuddin Siddiqui or director Anurag Kashyap about the scene, while she alone was repeatedly asked why she “did it.”

The issue also reflects a larger problem in the digital era, where manipulated intimate content and non-consensual image circulation continue to disproportionately affect women. Recent studies on deepfake and non-consensual intimate imagery have warned that such abuse is becoming one of the fastest-growing forms of online exploitation globally.

Rajshri’s experience became one of the earliest high-profile Indian entertainment cases highlighting how quickly streaming-era content could be weaponised online through editing, misinformation and viral circulation.

At the time, Sacred Games itself was already a cultural phenomenon. Released in 2018 as Netflix India’s first original series, the show transformed the Indian OTT landscape and helped push streaming storytelling into mainstream Indian entertainment.

Created by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, the series explored crime, politics, religion and power through the story of gangster Ganesh Gaitonde and police officer Sartaj Singh. The show became internationally recognised for its bold storytelling and cinematic style.

For Rajshri, however, the personal consequences of one particular scene ended up overshadowing what should have been a career-defining performance.

The actor has repeatedly clarified over the years that she had no regrets about performing intimate scenes as an artist. Instead, her issue was with the illegal manipulation and misuse of the footage afterward.

In earlier interviews, Rajshri argued that consensual intimacy portrayed within a story should not automatically become scandalous, especially in a society that still struggles to discuss sexuality openly.

Despite the controversy, Rajshri Deshpande continued building a strong career across independent cinema, OTT projects and international films. Over the years, she earned critical acclaim for performances in projects such as Sexy Durga, Manto, Trial by Fire, The Fame Game and Joram.

In 2023, she won the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for Trial by Fire, where she portrayed Neelam Krishnamoorthy, a mother seeking justice after losing her children in the Uphaar cinema fire tragedy.

More recently, Rajshri has also received praise for portraying a trans man in the Marathi film Baapya. In interviews around the project, the actor revealed that she spent extensive time with members of the trans community to understand their experiences authentically.

Earlier this year, Rajshri additionally revealed that she had undergone surgery after being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. The actor shared that the illness was detected during a routine check-up and treated successfully because it was caught early.

Fans online reacted emotionally to her latest comments, with many supporting her demand to move beyond the Sacred Games controversy. Several users praised the actor for continuing to build a respected career despite enduring years of online trolling and cyber exploitation.

Others also noted how difficult it can be for public figures to escape viral narratives created by internet culture, especially when controversies become permanently attached to search engines.
