Actor Saif Ali Khan has weighed in on the long-standing discussion about pay disparity in Bollywood, stating that gender alone does not determine how much actors are paid in the film industry. The actor shared his perspective during a recent conversation about how remuneration works in Hindi cinema and what factors influence an actor’s paycheck.
The issue of unequal pay between male and female actors has been widely debated over the years, with several leading actresses speaking openly about the gap in earnings. Many female performers have argued that actresses are often paid significantly less than their male counterparts, even when they hold equally important roles in films.
Addressing the debate, Saif said he believes that an actor’s pay is largely determined by their ability to attract audiences to theatres rather than gender. According to him, the industry functions primarily on commercial considerations, where market demand and box office pull play major roles in deciding remuneration.
Saif explained that in the film business, producers and studios usually base salaries on how much revenue an actor is likely to generate. He noted that actors who consistently deliver successful films or have strong audience appeal tend to command higher fees. In his view, this system applies to both men and women.
The actor emphasised that the film industry is ultimately a business. Because of this, financial decisions are often linked to profitability rather than gender. He suggested that the actors who bring the most value in terms of ticket sales and viewership usually receive higher compensation.
At the same time, Saif acknowledged that the conversation around pay parity is important and deserves attention. Over the past few years, several actresses including Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut and Taapsee Pannu have spoken about negotiating higher salaries and demanding equal pay for their work.
Saif also pointed out that the industry is evolving and that female-led films are gradually becoming more common. As audiences increasingly support stories centred on women, actresses are gaining stronger negotiating power when it comes to remuneration.
The actor’s remarks come at a time when discussions about workplace equality have gained momentum across industries, including cinema. In Bollywood, the debate often resurfaces whenever major projects reveal stark differences between what male and female actors earn.
While Saif’s comments highlight the role of market forces in determining pay, critics of the system argue that structural inequalities still exist. They believe that male actors have historically been given more opportunities to lead big-budget films, which naturally results in higher earning potential.
Supporters of pay parity have also argued that actresses often work under similar conditions and contribute equally to the success of a film. For them, the demand for equal pay is not just about market value but also about fairness and recognition.
Saif, however, maintained that success in cinema is closely tied to audience response. He said that the actors who draw crowds and deliver commercial success will continue to be rewarded accordingly, regardless of gender.
The actor has been part of the Hindi film industry for over three decades and has seen several changes in how films are produced and marketed. Over the years, he has taken on a wide variety of roles across genres, from romantic comedies and historical dramas to web series and action films.
