Bombay Hospital Launches Trans-Voice Surgery Package in India at Affordable Rates

In its efforts at empowering the transgender community, Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Centre has introduced India’s first Trans-Voice Surgical Package-a comprehensive and affordable program designed to assist transgender individuals in achieving a voice that aligns with their gender identity.

This initiative, led by renowned Laryngologist and Voice Surgeon Dr Nupur Nerurkar, offers voice change surgery at a subsidized cost of just 20,000, not including any emergency care that any patient may occasionally need, with the patients admitted to the general ward. The package is specifically tailored for transgender individuals who are undergoing hormonal treatments and other gender-affirming procedures.

Highlighting the significance of the Trans Voice Package, Dr Nerurkar said, “For transgender individuals transitioning from male to female, voice often becomes a hindrance, as hormonal treatments do not feminize the voice. Many rely on voice modulation, but it can cause vocal fatigue and mental stress. Voice change surgery permits the transwoman to always sound feminine.”

Dr Nerurkar, who has performed over 60 transvoice surgeries, explained the advanced technique used in the procedure: “Fifty years ago, voice-changing surgeries involved making a cut on the throat to stretch the vocal cords. Today, we use an endoscopic approach, suturing half the vocal fold to shorten its length, thereby raising the pitch. This method typically results in pitch increase and without any neck scar.”

The Trans Voice Package is a significant step toward integrating transgender individuals into society by addressing one of the most critical aspects of their transition journey. The program reflects Bombay Hospital’s commitment to combining excellence in healthcare with compassion and affordability.

The first two patients under this program were successfully operated in this month, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for many more to come.

Trans Voice Package:

Dr Rajkumar V Patil – Director – Medical Services, said “This initiative caters to transgender individuals who are not covered by insurance and cannot afford high-cost surgeries. By offering cutting-edge voice change surgery at an affordable rate, the hospital aims to provide life-changing treatments that are efficient, compassionate, and accessible”.
