Jail Radio In District Jail Sirsa; 6 Inmates Selected As Radio Jockeys

Jail Radio is soon going to knock the door of District Jail Sirsa. 6 inmates have been selected to be a part of the Radio Presentation Skill Training course to be organised by Dr. Vartika Nanda, prison reformer and founder of Tinka inka. Out of all these 6 inmates, 2 inmates are convicts. District Jail Sirsa is considered as one of the oldest jails in Haryana. Presently, 1250 inmates are lodged in this prison against the capacity of 800 inmates.

PHASE I OF JAIL RADIO

Jail radio has already been commenced in District Jail Panipat, District Jail Faridabad and Central Jail Ambala. First Jail Radio in Haryana was inaugurated by Shri Ranjit Singh(Jail Minister), Haryana, Shri Rajeev Arora, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Home & Health, Jail Department, Government of Haryana and Shri K. Selvaraj, IPS, Director General of Prisons, Haryana in January this year.

PHASE II OF JAIL RADIO
The second phase of prison radio will cover District jail Karnal, District Jail Rohtak, District Jail Gurugram and Central Jail No.1, Hisar.

PHASE III OF JAIL RADIO

The process of audition of inmates in District Jail Sirsa has been finalised in the third phase. The third phase will cover 5 jails that will include District Jail Sirsa, Sonipat, Jind, Jhajjar and Yamunanagar.

DRUG ADDICTION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN – THE MOTO

This is also the election constituency of Jail Minister Shri Ranjit Singh. The Jail Radio will have a theme of drug addiction as it is a pertinent issue in this part of the state.

JAIL RADIO STATION

The process to convert a room to the radio station has already begun.

CONTRIBUTION OF THE JAIL STAFF

Shri Sher Singh, Jail Superintendent is working hard to make this dream a reality. He said that this is going to be the first time when the inmates will hold microphones in their hands. Inmates are excited for this new initiative.

ABOUT VARTIKA NANDA

Jail Radio in Haryana is the brainchild of Dr. Vartika Nanda. She is India’s leading prison reformer and has previously started the Jail Radio in 2019 in District Jail, Agra. Her Tinka Tinka series of books on jails are considered to be masterpieces on prison reforms. She has given a new dimension to prison related research in India. Currently she heads the Department of Journalism in Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi University.
