Prison Radio To Help Inmates Cope Stress During Covid-19

Haryana Prisons have launched 4 prison radios today. These jails are District Jails Karnal, Rohtak, Gurugram and Central Jail, Hisar 1. These prison radios were inaugurated by Shri Rajiv Arora (IAS), ACS Home and Shri K. Selvaraj (IPS Retd.), DG, Prisons Haryana in the presence of 3 Session Judges Shri Jagdeep Jain, Shri A S Narang and Shri Arun Kumar Singhal. Prison Radio has helped inmates cope with depression during Covid-19.

This is a major step by Haryana Prisons to help inmates during Covid-19. 47 inmates have been trained so far, including one transgender and 10 women inmates. Prison Radio in Haryana is conceptualized and executed by Dr. Vartika Nanda, Founder, Tinka Tinka Foundation and head of Department of Journalism in Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University.

3 prison radios are already launched in Haryana in January- February this year, first being Panipat Jail Radio.

Prison Radio is conceptualized and training is given by Vartika Nanda, Founder, Tinka Tinka Foundation and head of Department of journalism in Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. Her Tinka Tinka movement has been helping in fulfilling communication needs of inmates across different prisons in India. She has recently launched Tinka Prison Research Cell to carry out research on the impact of jail radio during Covid-19. This was released by Shri K. Selvaraj (IPS), DG Prisons, Haryana. Main objective of this cell is to promote prison related research.
