Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has sparked a fresh controversy after making a series of remarks about Generation Z protesters who participated in the recent student movement over alleged examination irregularities. Her comments, posted on Instagram Stories, drew sharp criticism online, with many accusing her of making sweeping generalisations and using offensive language to describe an entire generation.
The controversy stems from Kangana’s reaction to videos and social media content shared during the youth-led protests organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). While criticising the language and behaviour displayed in some protest reels and placards, the actor referred to sections of Gen Z as “Generation Gutter” and questioned their upbringing. She also made remarks about young people, particularly women, alleging that they lacked discipline, academic merit and traditional values.
Among her most controversial comments was the claim that members of the generation were “not good at studies” and were incapable of becoming responsible homemakers. She also questioned the values of young women who had participated in the demonstrations, asking who was “birthing and raising them” while describing several viral protest videos as “puke-inducing”.
Kangana’s remarks quickly went viral, prompting a wave of criticism across social media platforms. Many users argued that while some protest slogans and online content may have crossed the line, condemning an entire generation using derogatory language was unfair and counterproductive. Several people also pointed out that Gen Z includes students who have spent years preparing for competitive examinations and were protesting over concerns about fairness and transparency in the education system.
Others defended the actor, saying she was reacting specifically to abusive slogans and objectionable content shared during the protests rather than criticising every young person. Supporters argued that freedom of expression also allows criticism of protest tactics, especially when demonstrations include offensive language or personal attacks.
The student movement emerged after allegations of irregularities in competitive examinations triggered protests across several cities. What began as demonstrations over examination reforms gradually evolved into a nationwide youth movement demanding greater accountability, transparency and institutional reform. The protests eventually prompted the Centre to announce a series of measures, including changes to examination procedures and action against those allegedly responsible for paper leaks.
Kangana has been among the most vocal public figures commenting on the protests. Earlier, she congratulated NEET topper Vaishnavi Das while linking academic success with faith, remarks that also generated debate online. More recently, a fake social media post falsely claimed she wanted to become India’s next Education Minister, a claim that was later debunked.
As of now, Kangana has not issued any clarification or apology regarding the “Generation Gutter” remarks.
