Apoorva Mukhija Reveals Why She Moved to New York: ‘The Kaleshi Aurat Is Dead Now’

Content creator and actor Apoorva Mukhija, popularly known as The Rebel Kid, has revealed that she has moved to New York to pursue an MBA, marking a major personal and professional shift after the controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent. Sharing the update with fans, Apoorva wrote on Instagram, “So I don’t live in India anymore.”

Speaking on the podcast Untriggered by AminJaz, Apoorva explained that moving abroad had been a long-standing dream. She said she had travelled to several countries, but New York was the only city where she instantly felt she wanted to live.

“There’s something about this city. It’s so fast, everyone is so well dressed, the food is great, and I love the architecture,” she said, adding that she had grown up watching New York in many of her favourite shows.

Apoorva revealed that she applied to only one college in New York and decided that if she got admission, she would relocate. She has now enrolled in an MBA programme and will be living in a student dorm, returning to campus life after building a successful career as a digital creator.

The influencer admitted that the move is both exciting and terrifying. While New York fulfils a lifelong ambition, she said leaving behind her friends, career and familiar life in India has been emotionally difficult.

During the conversation, Apoorva also reflected on the lasting impact of being “cancelled” following the India’s Got Latent controversy. She said she has become exhausted by the cycle of backlash and comebacks, explaining that even a few weeks of cancellation can result in losing brand deals and income. She candidly admitted that the financial consequences are what affect her the most.

The creator also surprised fans by saying that her online persona has changed significantly. Referring to her famously dramatic storytelling style, she declared, “The kaleshi aurat is dead now.” According to Apoorva, she understands what kind of content performs well online, but in New York she wants to create videos only when she genuinely feels like it rather than chasing consistency.

Her relocation comes more than a year after the India’s Got Latent controversy, which saw multiple FIRs filed against panellists following offensive remarks made on the show. Apoorva had previously spoken about receiving rape and death threats during that period and described it as one of the darkest phases of her life.

Most recently, Apoorva appeared on Lock Upp as a special informant, reintroducing herself to television audiences before beginning this new chapter overseas.
