Actor Akshay Kumar has addressed the long-standing criticism over his look in Samrat Prithviraj, particularly the use of a “fake moustache,” acknowledging the backlash and offering an apology while explaining the creative decision behind it.
The actor, who portrayed the historical figure Prithviraj Chauhan in the 2022 film, faced widespread scrutiny at the time of its release, with many viewers questioning the authenticity of his appearance. The use of a visibly artificial moustache became one of the most talked-about aspects of the criticism directed at his performance.
Speaking on a podcast hosted by Shubhankar Mishra, Akshay revisited the issue and clarified that the choice was not due to a lack of effort or preparation. He said that the specific style of moustache required for the character could not be grown naturally by him.
“In Samrat Prithviraj, the story required a particular kind of moustache, and that kind of moustache cannot grow naturally on my face,” he said, explaining the reasoning behind opting for an artificial look.
The actor also addressed criticism suggesting that he does not dedicate enough time to his roles. He pointed out that growing facial hair for a role can require weeks of preparation, during which actors may not be able to take on other projects. “I took around six weeks to grow a beard… and during that time I didn’t work,” he said, adding that his schedule often involves juggling multiple films and looks.
Acknowledging audience reactions, Akshay admitted that the final result may not have worked for everyone. “Maybe the fake moustache didn’t look good, maybe a lot of people didn’t like it,” he said, before adding, “If people didn’t like it, then I am sorry.”
He further emphasised that filmmaking often involves practical limitations and creative compromises. According to him, certain physical attributes required for a character may not always be achievable naturally, making prosthetics or artificial enhancements necessary.
The actor’s remarks come four years after the film’s release, which had generated high expectations but received mixed-to-negative reviews and underperformed at the box office. Along with criticism of the storyline and execution, Akshay’s portrayal of the historical figure was also widely debated.
The moustache controversy had earlier sparked broader discussions about authenticity in historical roles, with some critics arguing that physical transformation is crucial for portraying iconic characters convincingly. Others, however, maintained that performance should take precedence over appearance.
Akshay’s recent comments appear to address both aspects, acknowledging audience expectations while also highlighting the practical challenges involved in achieving specific looks.
The episode has resurfaced in public discourse following his latest statement, with social media users revisiting the original criticism as well as his explanation. While some have appreciated his candid response and apology, others continue to debate the importance of preparation and physical transformation in such roles.
The actor, who remains one of Bollywood’s most prolific stars, is currently working on multiple projects, often managing tight schedules across films. His explanation reflects the realities of balancing varied roles while meeting the demands of large-scale productions.
